TLC organises volunteer UK medical teams to work with doctors and medical staff in developing countries, helping them develop the skills to run their own life-saving transplant programmes.
In the developing world kidney failure is common and yet transplantation almost does not exist. This inappropriate imbalance leads to many people dying or remaining on expensive dialysis when a transplant could save and transform their life and that of their families.
There is a desperate need for transplantation but unaided development is often an impossible task. TLC will provide visiting teams to perform living donor transplants and support services after the team has returned to the UK, maintaining a long-term link continuing to help each unit to learn and grow. TLC will provide mentorship and ‘twinning’ with UK units until they are self-sufficient, and to ensure that patients have the long-term support that they need. The long-term aim is to develop a global ‘family’ of units that look to Transplant Links as the catalyst that got them started.
Transplant Links is a non-religious and non-political charity relying on charitable donations, and the services of volunteer doctors and nurses giving their time and sharing their skills. It is run with minimal overheads.
The first charitable donation to Transplant Links was made by Mr Tony Jewitt, who sadly passed away just before the charity gained its registration. The charity will carry out its work in his memory.
