From 'first steps' to 'self-sufficiency'.

TLC visits and communicates with a variety of countries, providing the support appropriate to the stage of development of a transplant programme. This will range from giving advice on development of renal replacement services, to full team visits by a team of doctors.

TLC has provided support to date which has helped some centres to get started in the early stages of developing a transplant programme, and with others has helped to take them as far as offering transplants to children, with kidneys donated by parents or close relatives. The level of support given depends very much on the needs of each country, so a tailored approach is taken.

Initially in some countries, only a few patients may have a transplant, but over time, as the local skills develop, many more will benefit. The goal of the work of TLC is a network of sustainable national kidney transplant programmes where TLC was the catalyst for progress.
